Freebase Nicotine: The Current Standard
Traditional nicotine that most vapers would know and be used to is actually called ‘freebase’ nicotine. Without getting too technical, freebase is the purest form of nicotine and is the default “go-to” for most manufacturers. This nicotine solution is simply added to a mixture of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) which “carry” the nicotine with them when vaped. It’s also what we use in nicotine replacement therapies—like gums, patches, sprays, and lozenges.
Salts Nicotine: The Latest Development
Salts nicotine absorbs much faster into the blood system and also peaks much higher than traditional e-cigarettes.
Salt nicotine mimics more like an actual cigarette. So if you’re looking for someting to help you quit smoking and find regular e-cigs are not strong enough, or you just want more of a nicotine kick, then Salts nicotine is ideal for you.
What is the difference between regular E-liquid and Nic Salt?
Well Nic Salt is typically higher nicotine level (up to 20mg) and it’s a lot smoother to vape and the nicotine enters your bloodstream much easier and faster so you get a much stronger feeling. Nic Salt is also more expensive to produce so expect to pay a little more for it.
Here is a graph showing how cigarettes, nic salts and regular old freebase nicotine compare.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Too much for some: People who prefer sub-ohm vaping might get fair too much of a nicotine buzz with their cloud chasing tanks and mods. Also these devices chug throught the e-liquid and since nic salts are a little more expensive it’s just not as good for those who pefer to vape at under 10mg.
Fewer options: Nicotine salts are limiting because you’ll generally have to stick to vape pens and pods like JUUL Replacement Pods. The more traditional mods and sub-ohm tanks allow for nearly endless tank/mod combinations—each pair allowing for their own unique cloud production and flavor experiences. Not to mention the coil combinations and styles of the more advanced rebuildable atomizers – you get the idea.
Lower fun factor: Freebase liquid is great for sub-ohm vaping, clouds, loads of customisations, it has a slightly larger product range since it’s been around forever. But nicotine salts are the perfect choice if you need a strong dose of nicotine and prefer a more cigarette-like experience.
