Vaping has definitely become more popular in the last few years in Ireland.  However, despite this rise in popularity, there are many that believe it is simply a ‘passing fad’ that has only emerged in recent years.  Nothing could be further from the truth as the technology has been around for years.

It was actually in 1963 when the first electronic cigarette was patented by Herbert A. Gilbert. Gilbert had decided to create an alternative ‘to the scourge of tobacco cigarettes’ because he felt that this would save lives and, in the long term, be healthier. His original electronic or e-cigarette is very similar in design to the modern styles that are on the market today. Obviously, it was not as sophisticated or as effective a model as the ones currently available, but it looked the same and was based on the same technical elements, such as smokeless flavoured air, heating elements and flavoured cartridges. Unfortunately, during the 1960s the e-cigarette was in the early stages of development and did not get a lot of public attention. This was an incredible idea – the world simply was not ready for what Gilbert had to offer. However, when the patent expired manufacturers began to become interested in his idea.

It was not until 2006, when Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, released his e-cigarette, that the industry really started to build momentum. This e-cigarette consisted of an ultrasonic atomiser, a plastic cartridge, a battery and was also scaled down in size so it was easier for the user to carry around. Lik believes that vaping is the next logical stage in evolution for smoking, stating that the e-cigarette is comparable to the ‘digital camera taking over from the analogue camera’.  This clearly does not sound like a ‘passing fad’.

So, while vaping in Ireland is exceptionally popular now, the concept is actually very established. With such sound technological development backing a product of this nature, as well as its current proliferation, it would be hard to argue that the e-cigarette will suddenly disappear anytime soon.

These days, electronic cigarettes are becoming popular choices for men and women all over the world. However, the safety of these handy – and usually inexpensive – electronic gadgets is something that is hotly debated.
Since UK citizens are embracing e-cigs in ever-greater numbers (numbers should reach a staggering one million this year!), it’s important to take a look at the hard facts about electronic cigarettes, with a mind to determining whether they are harmful or helpful.

Many people view e-cigs as very convenient nicotine delivery systems. In addition, many proponents of e-cigs believe that they are better for the human body. The rationale behind this viewpoint is that e-cigs utilize water vapour, rather than smoke and tar.

If you’ve been hitting the United Kingdom’s pubs lately, you may have noticed a lot of e-cig users enjoying their electronic devices as they partake of friendly pints in the company of their buddies. Some use the e-cigs in public in order to avoid tiresome and restrictive “no smoking” laws. These types of users may or may not smoke real cigarettes when they are at places where it’s ok to smoke tobacco.
Others consider electronic cigs to be bona fide smoking cessation aids. In other words, they want to stay away from the real thing (due to the smoke, stench and tar) and they find that e-cigs give them the ability to stick to their guns…

E-cigs Provide Superior Sensation
In the eyes of some real-life users who want to quit smoking, e-cigs provide hope where other smoking cessation aids, such as patches and inhalers, tend to disappoint. The key difference between e-cigs and other smoking cessation aids is that electronic cigarettes really do simulate a smoking experience.

Therefore, e-cig users don’t feel like they are missing out on quite as much in terms of sheer sensation. E-cigs deliver significant “throat hit” by producing clouds of water vapour and nicotine.

It’s also possible to utilize e-juices and cartridges which contain no nicotine at all…or to choose e-juices or cartridges which contain lower levels of nicotine.
Some e-cig owners taper off with gradually decreasing levels of nicotine, while others feel safer staying with high levels. For some, high levels of nicotine make it simpler for them to avoid real cigarettes. In other words, by ensuring that they get a lot of nicotine daily, via their electronic cigarettes, they are better able to resist the urge to light up.

Most e-cig users plan to wean themselves off of nicotine over the long term. However, others enjoy nicotine and have no plans to give it up in the future.
As you can see, e-cig users have different reasons for buying and using e-cigs, and they espouse different philosophies.

Learn How E-cigs Work
A typical e-cig comes with two main components, which are battery and atomizer. When a user draws breath while using his or her electronic cigarette, liquidized nicotine is converted into water vapour, which is then inhaled by the e-cig user. The water vapour/e-juice “cloud” which is exhaled by an e-cig user will quickly dissipate into the air.

One hundred percent tobacco-free, e-cigs don’t feature tar (which is not a healthy substance… ingestion of tar may lead to fatal illnesses!) and they don’t create smoke.

An Expert Weighs In
If you’d like to hear what a highly-educated doctor has to say about e-cig usage in England, you’ll benefit from reading the opinions of John Britton. Britton is a notable professor who is a member in good standing of the Royal College of Physicians. Britton has remarked that increased e-cig usage will save millions of lives in his home country. In his opinion, if everyone who smokes tobacco in England switches to e-cigs, five million smoking-related deaths will be avoided.
Professor Britton also believes that nicotine is quite a safe stimulant, the same way that caffeine is, and that nicotine doesn’t (in and of itself) trigger serious or fatal illnesses. For this reason, in his eyes, ingesting nicotine isn’t particularly harmful.
However, Britton does not believe that e-cigs should be sold to the underage. His thinks strict rules should be in place, which ensure that underage people don’t have access to electronic cigarettes.

Are E-cigs Right for You?
Hopefully, this article has provided you with some facts which will help you to decide whether or not e-cigs are right for you. If you do decide to take the plunge and purchase your first electronic cigarette, you certainly won’t be alone.
E-cigs aren’t going anyplace. In the future, millions of people all over the world may use them in lieu of real cigarettes. While there are conflicting viewpoints with regard to the safety of e-cigs, it’s safe to say that many people (both experts and laypersons) do believe in them wholeheartedly.

If you’re looking for ways to stop smoking tobacco cigarettes, you may be considering electronic cigarettes. These e-cigs may offer a pathway away from tobacco cigarettes and the harmful health risks that they cause.

When you choose e-cigs, you’ll be choosing electronic gadgets which come with plenty of controversy, as these little devices are currently the subject of tons of fierce debate. However, many people do believe that electronic cigarettes are a smarter, safer nicotine delivery system option, primarily because they don’t produce smoke or tar.

Are E-cig Restrictions on the Horizon?
In the USA, two state senators recently made statements regarding their desire to restrict the way that electronic cigarettes may be marketed (in addition to the desire to curtail the amount of flavours of e-cig “e-juice” which are offered to consumers). The overarching goal of these new restrictions is to ensure that underage people won’t be enticed by “candy-flavoured” e-cig products.
Since e-cig juices and cartridges come in a dizzying array of tasty flavours, from cotton candy to Cherry cola to classic tobacco and beyond, many critics of e-cigs feel that they are simply too attractive to kids and teens…

Those who are classified as e-cig detractors have long argued that the many flavours of electronic cigarette juices and cartridges are just too appealing to youngsters… and they’re also against marketing of e-cigs which seems to target younger consumers.

However, a recent study proved that the majority of young e-cig users are already smokers of typical cigarettes. In other words, these youngsters have already been corrupted by marketing from Big Tobacco.

E-cigs Offer Ultimate Convenience
However, not everyone is against the usage of e-cigs, although most do oppose children and teens using these devices. The truth is that many studies do support the health benefits of e-cigs, versus the drawbacks of smoking real tobacco cigarettes. The rationale behind approval of e-cigs is that these electronic gadgets don’t have the large quantity of harmful ingredients which are found in typical cigarettes.

Profit motive may also play a role in how e-cigs are perceived. In other words, Big Tobacco and other corporate interests may oppose the increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes, as such popularity may lead to reduced market share for Big Tobacco products. Big Tobacco makes a fortune off of addiction and companies which sell conventional cigarettes have a vested interest in keeping their types of nicotine products front and centre in the eyes of consumers.

Some Big Tobacco companies are taking control by introducing electronic cigarette products of their own. Others are actively underscoring any perceived negative health risks of e-cigs, with a mind to making e-cigs look as bad as possible in the eyes of the general public. Big Tobacco may do this directly or via allies who highlight the downside of e-cigs in articles, TV reports and so on.

When it comes to sorting fact from hype and fiction, one particular study which was conducted in Europe showcased the value of e-cigs in terms of their roles as smoking cessation aids. This French study showed that a single percent of French smokers quit the tobacco habit for good due to their usage of electronic cigarettes.

Other studies show that young people really aren’t using e-cigs as much as electronic cig detractors want you to think they are. One study, which was published by the CDC, also indicated that younger people who do utilize electronic cigarettes tend to be those who’ve already begun smoking traditional cigarettes anyway. Therefore, the risk to youngsters may be somewhat overstated.
It’s important to cut through all of the hype when considering the value of electronic cigarettes, as well as their potential and existing drawbacks. Studies help to provide perspective which is much-needed.

Why Choose E-cigs, Anyway?
There are different reasons to opt for e-cigs, including convenience and smoking cessation assistance. Some people like being able to “smoke” these water vapour cigarettes in places where tobacco cigarettes aren’t permitted, such as pubs and other public venues. While some venues may frown on e-cigs, most public places do allow the usage of these cigarette substitutes.

Those who want to end their dependence on traditional cigarettes, by choosing a nicotine delivery system which is tar-free and smoke-free, may also be good candidates for e-cigs. While all of the pros and cons of e-cigs are yet to be determined, many people do find that they feel better when they use e-cigs, versus how they feel when they smoke regular cigarettes.

In the end, the decision to use e-cigs is a personal one. Smart and savvy consumers should therefore perform research and do their homework before deciding whether or not e-cigs meet their needs. A variety of electronic cigarettes are available online and these come with a wide range of features, at an assortment of price points. Product reviews of different models will help consumers to decide which styles are really right for their needs.

If you’re wondering how electronic cigarettes fit into the future, you’re certainly not alone. The BBC has been exploring this very same topic as of late. One of their reporters, Graham Satchell, recently wrote that the amount of e-cig users in the United Kingdom is growing and may reach one million this year.

This exponential growth is happening for a range of reasons. Some e-cig users opt for these “vapes” since they are very convenient – in other words, e-cigs allow users to access nicotine-laced water vapour in places where tobacco cigarettes may not be smoked. Others utilize electronic cigarettes as smoking cessation aids.
Increased sales of such products are an obvious sign that e-cigs are becoming far more popular. Unless research surfaces which proves that e-cigs are more harmful than tobacco cigarettes, it’s unlikely that these “vaping” products will become less popular.

On the contrary, sales figures indicate that the usage of electronic cigarettes will continue to rise over time.

Are E-cigs Effective “Quit Smoking” Aids?
A study performed by UBS states that projections for e-cig usage in America were expected to double. The market for electronic cigarettes is now expected to top half a billion dollars per year, versus the current market share of one quarter billion dollars per year. Some analysts find these estimates to be on the conservative side. As you can see, e-cig sales are really booming and there’s no sign of a slow-down, although plenty of electronic cigarette critics are out there.

Big Tobacco is attempting to stop the growth of the e-cig market or to create vaping products which are sold alongside their existing tobacco cigarette product lines. Since e-cig manufacturers have a mission to grab market share from Big Tobacco, many negative stories about e-cigs may potentially be traced back to those who have a vested interest in making vaping seem unhealthy and dangerous.

Of course, some critics of e-cigs aren’t in the pocket of Big Tobacco – however, it’s safe to say that some chatter about the drawbacks of electronic cigarettes may be the work of Big Tobacco and its allies.

Negative articles and reports about e-cigs are therefore not always to be trusted. A range of authorities do believe that e-cigs offer hope to those who can’t seem to quit tobacco cigarettes in the usual manner, via cold turkey programs or other smoking cessation aids, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and nicotine lozenges. In addition, certain prescription-strength medications which are utilized in order to help people quit (Chantrix is one example) are known to trigger unwanted side effects. In particular, Chantrix may cause suicidal thoughts in certain users.

So, it is important to consider the role that e-cigs play – and will continue to play in the future – in helping people to finally butt out and break a deadly bad habit, once and for all. For this reason, Clive Bates, who used to be the UK Director of Action on Smoking and Health, is critical of those who deride e-cigs as no better than tobacco cigarettes. He feels that critics of e-cigs are being influenced by the interests of large tobacco product manufacturers.

In addition, a psychiatrist who was interviewed by Fox News in the USA feels that e-cigs are the best smoking cessation options for his patients. This doctor believes that e-cigs provide an authentic “smoking” experience, minus the harmful smoke and tar. For this reason, he is comfortable going on record, publicly, as a supporter of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation. This doctor’s name is Keith Ablow and he’s one of the only doctors to courageously speak up on behalf of electronic cigarettes.

In our culture of political correctness, those who embrace e-cigs as the smoking cessation products of the future may not feel comfortable doing so publicly. However, in the future, when further clinical studies are performed which establish the safety of e-cigs, more medical authorities and other respected persons may come on board and let the public know that they believe e-cigs are the smartest way to quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. Conversely, any negative publicity about e-cigs (even if it comes from Big Tobacco, which has an interest in the failure of e-cigs on the open market) may push supporters back, into the shadows…

Should You Buy an E-cig?
There is plenty of research out there about e-cigs and their pros and cons. However, there aren’t as many clinical trials as there should be. This is why you’ll need to use your instincts and good judgment in order to decide whether or not buying an electronic cigarette is a smart decision. If you do decide that using an e-cig will be better than smoking a conventional cigarette (which contains smoke and tar, as well as other harmful compounds, such as acetone), it may be time to purchase your own electronic device online.

Many manufacturers offer affordable e-cigs for very reasonable prices.

Smoking triggers fatal illnesses and studies have proven that an addiction to cigarettes is even stronger than an addiction to heroin! If you’re sick and tired of being dependent on electronic cigarettes, you may find hope in e-cigs. One notable psychiatrist, Dr. Keith Ablow, recently shared his views on e-cigs as smoking cessation aids, via the Fox News network. Ablow believes that e-cigs make it easier for even the most die-hard smokers to butt out, because they provide a “smoking” experience than people just can’t get from other types of smoking cessation therapies.

E-cigs are short for electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine via water vapour, so they provide an effective nicotine delivery system which offers a very realistic “smoking” experience, without the stench, tar, mess and smoke.

When you choose an e-cig as your preferred method of quitting smoking, you’ll access water vapour which makes for a potent “throat hit”! E-cig users love this throat hit, as it feels very much the way that actual smoke does when it hits the back of the throat during inhalation. However, the “smoke” that is produced by an e-cig isn’t really smoke at all! Instead, it’s water vapour, which is mixed with e-juice. E-juice may or may not contain nicotine, according to the e-cig owner’s preference, and it comes in tons of wonderful flavours, from Cappuccino to Cherry to faux-Marlboro and beyond.

So, e-cig water vapour is flavourful, it comes in varying levels of nicotine or nicotine-free formulas, and it’s easy to find “e-juices” which provide variety and taste for affordable prices. In addition, it’s possible to buy e-cig starter kits for rather low prices, depending on the features that you’re looking for. Within the e-cig market, there are basic, mid-range and high-end electronic cigarettes – you may choose what’s best for your needs and budget.

Taper Off of Nicotine with an E-cig

It’s estimated that almost one million e-cig users live in the UK and these e-cig users take their “vapes” to tons of public places, such as pubs and concert halls. The places where smokers used to suffer from nicotine cravings are now places where electronic cigarettes may be used. While every venue won’t permit the usage of e-cigs, more and more locations are embracing clientele who utilize e-cigs.

If you’ve ever suffered on a subway or train because you just couldn’t smoke, you may find that tapering off nicotine via an e-cig is the best way to get your nicotine fix, no matter where you are, while you also work toward the goal of ending your dependence on nicotine.

Experts don’t feel that nicotine is inherently harmful in moderate quantities. They put it on the same level as caffeine in terms of its benefits and drawbacks. It’s actually the tar and smoke in cigarettes which has earned them the nickname, “cancer sticks”. So, choosing e-cigs will be the best way to stop ingesting tar and smoke as you get the nicotine that you’re hooked on.

While some detractors do feel that e-cigs are harmful, others believe that these electronic cigarettes are the wave of the future and that their water vapour is essentially harmless. The vapour emitted by e-cigs is similar to that which is produced by asthma inhalers, and these have been utilized for decades now.

The Jury is Still Out

For some reasons, governments are reluctant to extensively test e-cigs for health benefits and drawbacks. This is why there is a lack of clinical studies about these new electronic devices. So, why are government so reticent with regard to exploring the potential of e-cigs? Well, the answer may lie in Big Tobacco’s influence. As you’re surely aware, Big Tobacco is a multi-billion dollar business. Big Tobacco companies have the means and desire to push conventional cigarettes and to push e-cig information into the shadows. It’s all about profit motive.

Some tobacco companies are beginning to produce vaping products of their own. They can see which way the wind is blowing. Others remain committed to highlighting any downsides of e-cig usage, in order to promote the status quo. After all, when people buy e-cigs, they often stop buying expensive and harmful tobacco cigarettes, and this negatively impacts the bottom line at Big Tobacco companies.

As you can see, e-cigs may just be the most revolutionary smoking cessation aids around. While they are steeped in controversy, ordinary people see their benefits and believe in them, even in lieu of formal clinical trials and studies. These people are convinced that e-cigs offer fewer drawbacks than tobacco cigarettes, as well as more convenience.

It’s just not politically correct to smoke real cigarettes anymore. It’s frowned upon due to second-hand smoke and the health damage that it may cause. By choosing an e-cig instead, you may move closer to a tobacco-free lifestyle, one vapour cloud at a time.

So, why not order your own e-cig today?

The electronic smoking alternatives — at least according to recent headlines — may cause cancer, lead teenagers into a lifetime of nicotine addiction and don’t help smokers quit. Predictably, politicians are again demanding that something be done to protect the public from the proliferation of electronic cigarettes.

In the US Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Henry Waxman announced on that they want to restrict e-cigarette marketing and limit the flavors of nicotine e-liquid available to consumers. According to Durbin, the regulations are meant to discourage e-cigarette use among children because it is “ … a candy-flavored addiction, which is dangerous to our young people … and sadly poses serious public health threats.”

E-cigarette critics have been making this assertion for nearly a decade. They were wrong then because we had no evidence one way or the other, and they’re wrong now because the evidence we’ve gathered contradicts their claims. Put simply, Durbin and Waxman with the help of the media are misleading the public about e-cigarettes, who’s using them and how safe they are.

E-cigarette use has exploded in recent years. As a result, so has the research investigating how the smoking alternatives affect human health. Going back to 2011, we’ve had clinical evidence that smokers who switch to e-cigarettes are able to quit tobacco entirely, and do so with few or no side effects, and that’s very likely because the chemicals in e-cigarettes are not dangerous.

Today it’s the same story. A study published this month by researchers in England found that smoking cessation in the country has increased significantly right along with the growth of e-cigarette use. The result doesn’t necessarily prove that e-cigarettes caused the decline in smoking, but as the study’s authors concluded, the “Evidence conflicts with the view that electronic cigarettes are undermining tobacco control … and they may be contributing to a reduction in smoking prevalence through increased success at quitting smoking.”

Other studies from Europe have yielded even more impressive results, with one French survey (English summary available here) finding that e-cigarettes may have helped 1% of the France’s population quit smoking.

These studies are important because they demonstrate the effectiveness of e-cigarettes. But they’re even more important because they provide solid evidence that smokers — people already addicted to nicotine — are using the devices to quit; children are not using e-cigarettes to develop a nicotine addiction. You may see contrary stories in the news, but the suggestion that kids are taking up e-cigarettes is based on nothing more than badly misinterpreted CDC statistics, released in 2013. Moreover, a study published just a week after the CDC data found that e-cigarette use among teenagers is very low, and the teens who had tried e-cigarettes were already smokers.

Durbin, Waxman and other critics will undoubtedly continue to cry foul about advertising aimed at children, but the growing body of evidence about e-cigarette use renders their complaints moot. If e-cigarette manufacturers are marketing their products to kids, they sure suck at it, as the numbers above illustrate. But that’s assuming the manufacturers are targeting children, and several major e-cigarette brands have successfully argued in court that they are not. In response to these new proposed rules, six manufacturers also said they would favor a ban on selling e-cigarettes to minors.

That brings us to an important point: Nobody involved in this debate is against sensible regulations. It’s perfectly reasonable to put an age restriction on the sale of e-cigarettes, but misrepresenting the evidence and demonizing a life-saving product in the process is not only unnecessary but shameful. As cigarette consumption both around the world and in the United States continues to drop, we should acknowledge that the growing popularity of e-cigarettes is a massive win for public health.
